Security officers play an essential role in maintaining public order, so it is particularly egregious for them to suffer harassment or assault while carrying out their duties, said NMP Raj Joshua Thomas in Parliament on Tuesday (Oct 5). He welcomed proposed penalties for abusing security officers that are higher than those for similar offences against members of the public. He also pointed to unfair or discriminatory contracts imposed “with impunity” on security officers by service buyers or managing agents. He called for this to be addressed when fair employment guidelines are enshrined in law.
