MP Muhamad Faisal Abdul Manap renewed his call for a reintroduction of the hardship scheme for hawker centre stalls in Parliament on Thursday (Mar 4). He was referring to a 1970s scheme for those aged 40 and above with low family income and dependants to rent hawker stalls at subsidised rates. He had called for the scheme, which was discontinued in the early 1990s, to be reintroduced in 2016. He said that over the last four years, he had met a number of needy residents, including ex-offenders, who have culinary skills and wished to run a hawker stall with affordable operating costs.
