Mr Pribakaran Kunju first stumbled upon the job opening at SPCA during a meeting with a friend in 1979. Despite his initial hesitation, he agreed to go for an interview as his friend promised they would be working side by side.

Fast forward 46 years and you could say Mr Pribakaran is a changed man. The 69-year-old started as an animal care officer. Now, as a senior shelter executive, his main task involves reuniting lost pets with their owners.

Through constant training and exposure, he has not only overcome his fear of dogs but also become adept at handling them.

As for what kept him going, he said it was the income stability at first, but not anymore. “For me, if it’s S$200 or S$100, I’ll still work. Because why? It’s for the animals that I stay, that is one thing that makes me stay for over 40 years."
