Man arrested for suspected drug trafficking; S$182,000 worth of drugs seized including 2.1kg of cannabis
SINGAPORE — A 32-year-old man was arrested on Tuesday afternoon (Feb 21) for suspected drug trafficking offences, the Central Narcotics Bureau (CNB) said.
In a media release on Thursday, CNB said that close to 5kg of drugs, with an estimated street value of S$182,000, were seized during an operation.
This comprised about 2.123kg of cannabis, 967g of heroin, 131g of methamphetamine (also known as Ice), 123g of ketamine, 263g of Ecstasy tablets, and 1.325kg of powdery substances believed to contain controlled drugs.
The amount of cannabis seized was enough to feed the addiction of about 300 abusers a week and for the heroin, about 460 abusers a week, CNB said.
The suspect, a Singaporean, was stopped in a luxury car in the vicinity of Bukit Timah Road and arrested. Officers then escorted him to his home near Punggol Field, where the drugs were found and seized.
Investigations into his drug activities are ongoing.
Superintendent William Tan, CNB’s senior assistant director of intelligence operations, said: “Despite knowing the harms of drugs, drug traffickers continue to peddle them and profit at the expense of people’s lives and livelihoods.
"To prevent and disrupt the circulation of drugs in our society, CNB has in place a comprehensive harm prevention approach including tough laws and robust enforcement to send a strong signal of deterrence against illicit drug activities."
Under the Misuse of Drugs Act, it is an offence for anyone to traffic or offer to traffic a controlled drug.
This is regardless of whether they are doing it on their own behalf or on the behalf of another person.
If found guilty of trafficking more than 500g of cannabis or 15g of pure heroin (diamorphine), the offender may face the mandatory death penalty.
