Police investigating accident involving 11-year-old boy hit by car while crossing the road
SINGAPORE — Police are investigating an accident involving a car that hit an 11-year-old boy at the junction of Teck Whye Crescent and Teck Whye Avenue in the Chua Chu Kang area.
Police said that on Tuesday (Sept 20) at 4.25pm, they were alerted to the accident and that the boy was taken conscious from the scene to the hospital.
A 53-year-old woman is assisting with ongoing investigations, they said.
In a video of the accident posted on the SG Road Vigilante Facebook page, a boy in a green uniform can be seen getting hit from his left side by a white car as he crosses the road. He then falls in front of the car.
The driver can be seen stopping the car upon hitting the boy, opening her car door and checking on the boy as he gets up from the fall.
Teck Whye Primary School has confirmed with TODAY that the boy is its student.
The driver was performing a discretionary right turn when the accident occurred.
Members of Parliament called for discretionary right turns to be scrapped in 2019, following two separate fatal accidents at the intersections of Commonwealth Avenue West and Clementi Road, as well as Upper Bukit Timah Road and Jalan Anak Bukit. In both cases, the junctions had discretionary turns.
In recent years, the Land Transport Authority has been progressively introducing red-amber-green signals for turns at locations where there might be safety concerns.
